What It Is
AltoOS is not a generic Linux distribution. It is a purpose-configured workstation OS built around Maintain Ops Suite — so every machine in your fleet is already set up, already connected, and already reporting before your team sits down.
Alpha Release — AltoOS is currently in active development. Early access is available for evaluation and feedback. Production rollout is planned following completion of the 1.0 milestone.
Built-in endpoint agent phones home every 5 minutes — reporting health, scanning for CVEs against the NIST NVD database, and receiving software deployment commands from MOS administrators.

AltoFleet Endpoint Agent
AltoFleet is a lightweight Python agent that runs as a systemd service on every AltoOS workstation. It checks in with your Nextcloud server on a 5-minute heartbeat, sending real-time status, installed package lists, and system health data directly into Maintain Ops Suite.
Every 7 days — or on demand — AltoFleet runs a full Trivy CVE scan against the NIST National Vulnerability Database and reports findings back to MOS. Critical and High vulnerabilities automatically generate tracked deficiencies in the operations register.
Software Catalog
AltoOS ships with a native software client that gives users visibility into what's available, what they've requested, and what's installed — without ever needing sudo access or a trip to the IT desk.
Requests flow through a four-tier approval workflow in Maintain Ops Suite: submitted → under review → approved → deploying. Once approved, AltoFleet silently installs the package at the next heartbeat. Rejected requests include a reason that surfaces in the user's client.
Native App Launchers
Maintain Ops Suite and Nextcloud Talk open as first-class KDE Plasma windows — not browser tabs. The altoos-launcher application wraps each Nextcloud app in a dedicated WebEngine window with a persistent cookie store, so users stay logged in between sessions.
Each launcher strips the Nextcloud navigation chrome, leaving only the application itself. The result feels like a native desktop app, not a website. Keyboard shortcuts, full-screen mode, and the KDE taskbar all work as expected.
Installer & First Boot
AltoOS ships as a bootable ISO with a Calamares-based graphical installer fully branded with AltoOS visual identity — custom GRUB theme, AltoOS Plymouth boot splash, and desktop branding preconfigured out of the box.
On first login, the AltoOS Setup wizard walks the user through connecting to their organization's Nextcloud server. Setup takes under two minutes and handles AltoFleet registration, MOS launcher configuration, and service activation automatically.
Deployment Flow
AltoOS is designed to go from ISO to fully operational fleet node in under 15 minutes — with no manual configuration, no scripting, and no IT tickets.
Flash to USB and boot. The AltoOS installer walks through language, partition, and user setup with a clean graphical interface.
The AltoOS Setup wizard launches automatically. Enter your Nextcloud server URL — Setup handles the rest.
Within 5 minutes, the endpoint appears in the MOS Fleet Nodes dashboard — online, reporting, and ready for management.
AltoFleet runs an initial Trivy scan. Vulnerabilities are reported to MOS, and critical findings auto-generate deficiencies.
MOS and Talk launchers are preconfigured. Users open their apps, log in once, and stay in — no browser, no navigation overhead.
